Assignment 4

Loma, in this first portrait, belayed us at the rock wall in the Colvin. He's a junior studying wildlife management and was recently recertified to belay. For the purposes of the portrait, I wanted to make sure it was natural, which required me not being invasive, and I wanted to make sure it had context, which meant not including his face in the picture so as to include the rock wall. Loma is a really cool, relaxed guy and wasn't phased at all by me taking pictures of him.

In this second portrait is Megan. Megan works at a store downtown called Formal Fantasy. She's a hotel and restaraunt management major, but started out as an interior design major and is considering event management. She has three semesters left and is engaged. She does alterations and hemming as well as helping customers find dresses and tuxes. She learned to sew in middle school, but said that the owner of the store also teaches her employees how to work on the dresses and other clothing they get in. One interesting thing Megan told me about the owner of the store is that she keeps notes on what girls from which schools buy which dresses and who is selling what at nearby stores so that no girl will be wearing the same dress as another girl at the dance.

For both portraits, I really wanted to capture students doing things that are almost related to their major and to really just see what some students do in their free time.
