Final Project: Mt. Zion Baptist Church

This is Mt. Zion Baptist church. It’s a small church with a big community located on 9th and Hester.

Pastor Calvin Miller delivers a sermon almost every Sunday, and is guided by what God tells him to preach.

The congregation reads the chosen scripture aloud from their church bulletins.

Two men hold hands during prayer. The congregation gathers in a circle around people who need extra prayers that week.

On Palm Sunday, Pastor Miller preaches to the Langston football team. Pastor Miller is Langston’s defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

A song moves Jean Boldon during choir rehearsal.

Jesse Keel give testimony on Easter Sunday about his experience with Jesus, and how his mother Claudette Petties has recovered from a hip surgery in record time.

After his testimony, the church gathers around him and the other families in need of prayer.

Mt. Zion youth performs a dance to Don’t Cry by Kirk Franklin on Easter Sunday to celebrate that Jesus has risen.

Mt. Zion Choir sings a gospel song at the beginning of service on Easter Sunday.

Claudette sings a solo while Pastor Miller and Regina Middleton stand up and sing along.

Five minutes into a sermon, Pastor Miller carries with him a white handkerchief so that sweat doesn’t let him miss a moment of preaching.

A little boy sits in the back row playing with his iPad on Easter Sunday.

“The holy Spirit will pick you up, turn you around and set your feet on solid ground,” said Pastor Miller.

The congregation makes their way to the front to the offering basket, and no offering is too small.
On Easter Sunday, an egg hunt a couple blocks away from the church was held after service. Some kids who didn’t find many eggs got to pick out a few.

Parents waited for all the kids to pose for the Mt. Zion youth picture after the Easter egg hunt.

After a performance from William Sims, Shakira Lane and Kierra Middleton, the youth singers hug the choir director Karen Washington.

Congregation references their bibles during Pastor Miller’s sermons.

An usher pin worn by all the ushers who help you to your seat, guide you through offering and communion.
