This is Southwestern Publishing, a printing company in Oklahoma City. The company prints magazines, stationery, fliers and brochures. The company employs almost 100 people. Each employee is familiar with every machine and overlooks a specific part of the process. The printer press shares a building with various publishers that depend on the print side to create their products.
This is a printer. The machine is grabbing single sheets of paper and pushing them through the printer.
This is part of the printer's engine. It's also grabbing paper and moving it be sent through the printer.
This is a heater inside of the printer. It heats the paper enough that the fresh ink dries instantly so the other side of the sheet can also be printed on without smearing.
This is a close up shot of ink rollers inside the printer. These rollers bring ink to the printer.
The ink shovels mark the color of the ink in each printer. Most printings go through all 4 colors and a layer of color is added at each printer.
Buckets of leftover ink are sometimes used as ashtrays.
Brian is fixing an ultraviolet light, which helps dry the ink inside the printer.
Each light is necessary to ensure the printings dry quickly enough.
John, the floor manager, and one of his employees proof a set of samples before they are printed in bulk.
Laura is putting together calendars the company printed for Oklahoma Tourism. She has to assemble all 2,000 calendars by hand.
A smaller printer is shooting out envelopes into a box.
Darren packs up a box that's ready to be sent back to a client.
