Stan Kent has been with the Stillwater Fire Department for 7 years. Initially Stan wanted to work for the Tulsa Fire Department, but he thought he may be better off somewhere less competitive. When Stan applied for the Stillwater Fire Department there were only two positions opened for 60 applicants. Fortunately Stan got hired by the Stillwater Fire Department and considers it "a great job."
Stan says he works three days out of the week and commutes from Owasso to Stillwater. "It's not a bad drive," Stan said. A lot has changed since Stan first started working for the fire department. Stan says back in his day you would get a cold bucket of water poured on top of you if you were caught sleeping, but now there are more rules and regulations. Stan and his fellow workers sleep in bunks overnight, but the most rest they probably get is an hour or two since it's a 24 hour shift. "I don't know how the guys in their late '50s do it," Stan said.
Stan said that he instills in his children some of the rules he had to conform to when joining the fire department. "There are some rules I don't agree with, but I'm lucky to have gone through some of the stuff I did not agree with because it made me a better person," Stan said. For Stan an hour commute and 24-hour 3 day shift is worthwhile and a decade of staying busy has not stopped his flow of energy that he devotes to the Stillwater Fire Department.
