I wanted to try to capture the essence of mourning and
reminiscing a lost loved one. I originally wanted to have
a photo essay of just one person's loss, but then realized
the people we lose, the way we lose them and how we
mourn varies from person to person.
In these photos, I have each person hold a photo of their
loved one that died and some have items left for them that
remind them of that person they lost.
This is Britney. Britney lost her mother only a few
days after her high school graduation five years ago.
Britney and her sister go to their mother's grave site on
their mother's birthday each year and set a Diet Dr. Pepper,
her favorite drink, next to fresh flowers.
Colton lost his grandmother and grandfather. He attended
mass every week with his grandmother until she died.
After his grandmother died, Colton kept her necklace
that was made from an 1881 U.S. coin.
This is Cadie. Cadie's cousin, his wife and their four year
old son were in a car accident six months ago. The mother and
child did not survive and the father was in a coma for several weeks.
She now works at an Urgent Care and has
considered going into the medical field after everything.
Joe lost his niece about eight years ago in a car accident.
He was a freshman in high school.
This photo of his niece is the only photo he has of her.
This is Sharon. Sharon lost her 17 year old brother
several years ago while she was away at college
and he was back home in New Mexico.
She kept his favorite guitar and plans
to fully restore it in the near future.
Clark lost one of his best friends from high school
right after beginning college four years ago.
One of their favorite books was The Outsiders
by S.E. Hinton.
