Oklahoma City Canal

For my location assignment I chose the canal in downtown Oklahoma City. The canal was completed in 1999 and is modeled after the River Walk in San Antonio. Boat rides, restaurants, bars and other forms of entertainment can all be found along the canal. A great place for the young and old, the Oklahoma City canal is both a local and tourist hot-spot.

zachgray - Karsten Creek [wk 7]

I'm happy with my selection of Karsten Creek for the photo essay, but I wish it would have been assigned later in the year.
The past two weeks have had bad weather with the exception of maybe a day or two. It's been cold and overcast for the most part. What that weather translates into is a lack of golfers on the greens – or in this case, pale yellows.
Even worse, the golf team was gone to a tournament for a big portion of the time and didn't have any organized practices the rest of it. The reason this is so bad is that the members of the golf team are just about the only ones to use the course.
There are a small handful of others that get the privilege of playing at Karsten, but not many. I suppose more could play if they wanted to, but would have to give up $300 a person to do so.
So, with the odds of getting anything meaningful against me, here's what I came up with.
I chose to start off with this because I think it is simple and effective. It sets up the viewer with the understanding that the essay has something to do with golf.
There were a couple of mounds like this on one of the driving ranges. It was about 8:30 a.m. so there was still dew on the grass to give some nice specular highlights.
To get to Karsten Creek, you have to take this long, windy road that cuts through the forrest. On the sides are a few nice residential areas with cleverly named roads like Perfect Drive. Oklahoma State's golf history is impressive enough to have a road to the course named Champions Place and not come off sounding cocky.
There was literally no one on the course the first day I went to Karsten. Luckily, I found an OSU golfer practicing her drive in the comfort of this shed.
This is the entrance to their pro shop. If you walk around Karsten Creek Golf Club, you can't go but a few seconds without seeing their logo on something. This mat is one example. I chose to stop the light way down to make the focus completely on the mat, while leaving enough light on the background to give information of the place.
As I mentioned before, OSU golf is insanely good. These are only a small fraction of the trophies in the hall of fame area.
This is the same golfer as before, only a few moments later. I probably shouldn't include two images of the same scene, – and I'm sure Shane will echo that thought – but they are shot in such different ways that it's not instantly recognizable.
After multiple days at Karsten and hourse of speeding around the cart path, I finally found someone actually playing golf. He was just about to tee off from 18, so this was my only chance.
When he got on the green, I noticed these skinny trees and thought they would make a good frame, so I ran up a hill to get in position. I could have gotten the same framing from lower, but I thought that putting him against grass rather than half grass, half water, would make him stand out a little more and make the shot a bit cleaner.
I was excited when I saw a few men cutting through the undergrowth. Luckily, one of the three spoke English and OK'd my photo-taking. I thought this would give a view of what goes on at the course that wouldn't be expected. A world-class golf course like Karsten Creek requires a lot of maintenance.
I chose this photo in particular because you can still see the course in the background. I had a couple frames that I liked better of the guys work with the chainsaw and tossing branches on the fire, but you couldn't tell that they were working at a golf course and therefore would be meaningless in the essay.
I thought this would be a good image to end on. I'm not in love with it, but it gives a good ending feel that I think works well at the close of the essay.

Portraits *Late*

The top picture is Ren Fridenberg. She is an administrative support assistant for the JB school. She does Renaissance reenactments and sews her own costumes. She's also getting ready to start her own business selling crafts. Ren is a very creative person. She has a blog, "The Other 353," to encourage people to keep the kind and giving Christmas spirit year-round. She will do anything to help out the JB students.

The photo itself is kind of drab, but I think that goes well with the attire. We shot some pictures inside, but her duplex is relatively small and it limited the wide-angle part of the assignment. I also liked her expression best in this picture.

Next, is Ernie Henry, owner of Nuway Cleaners in Broken Arrow. Their building is next to where I work, but I've never met him. A lot of our customers were amazed to learn they were closing. There were articles in the Broken Arrow Ledger and the Tulsa World. Henry's father opened the business before Ernie was born, and Ernie's first visit there was when he was three days old.

I like his resigned expression and the sign. There really wasn't much else to shoot to tell the story.

ASS FIVE

I chose the Seretean Performance Arts Center.
So, I must have misunderstood. I thought we had to post a picture of the place we're doing. Here's one anyway. Oh, and before you decide it's terribly un-level, the sign was actually leaning this badly. Shows how the town is kind of falling apart. Anyway, I'm doing my hometown, Kellyville.

Assignment Four

Lili Badiyan, owner of Sultan's International Food Market, studies the inventory list as she stocks a shipment of new goods. Lili and her husband opened the store, located at 111 W. Elm Ave. in Stillwater, in Oct. of 2008. The great variety of international foods offered make the store unique.

Lili serving Indain food to a customer. The store serves about 40 to 50 lunches and dinners daily.

Assignment 4: Portraits (Dana Lea Smith)

This man's name is John and he rebuilds classic cars and trucks. He sometimes shows them in classic car shows but eventually sells them and starts over with new cars. I took these pictures at his home in Beggs (a small town about 30 miles south of Tulsa). This first picture is of him sitting inside a '57 Chevy Bel-air in his garage

He really wanted a picture with the engine in this Impala because I guess it's really fast or something. I kind of like this picture but I wish there wasn't a shadow hiding his face. I guess I really just posted it because he would want me to show off this engine.

And here is a picture of him at his work station in his garage, working on the engine for the Bel-air I believe.

Close-ups

This is Nick and he was a last minute photo shoot for me because my original plans to shoot another girl fell through. I ended up kind of liking this though, he is a pre-pharmacy student at Tulsa Community College AND he is a rapper who has done a few shows and recently produced and released his own CD. His rap alias is "Raine" because his music has a really deep, emotional feel and most of it is about his troubled childhood. That is why I liked this first picture of him, it shows emotion.

And here is another with his headphones on.

assignment four box portraits

voilĂ  mes portraits

Casey Holgado is a sophomore at OSU studying computer science and an Air Force ROTC cadet from Baltimore, MD.

This is Zack. He likes to longboard and play the drums.

Assignment 4

This young lady is name Rosie from Georgia. She was kinda wondering why I was talking her picture, then after I told her she was okay with it!! lol
These two girl I however didn't caught their names but I asked them if I could take there picture as they were coming down the stairway between Booker-Stinchcomb. gentleman is Matt and I caught him off guard while he was waiting for the elevator to get on the first of Booker!! I took him at 18mm.

Assignment three box

I followed the styles of Ron Haviv. I like the way he uses his focusing techniques. Also, there is a great deal of emphasis on the angles, and random objects and signs. He truly sees things in a different way than an average person, and I tried to capture similar techniques.

Portrait Assignment

This image is of Broc Sewell. He came to OSU in 2006 weighing about 465 lbs. Now a senior, he's lost about half his weight while in Stillwater. I liked the idea of shooting him with a LOT of backlight. His superior view in the photo adds to the effect I thought.

This Portrait is of Acea Hathcock, an OSU student Majoring in Nutrition. He really likes to work out, so I did several portraits of him kissing his biceps. In the end, I chose this one because he looks too intense to ignore.
