The first image imitates Tim Walker photography who photographs a lot of fashion photography. I used the lighting that was available, which was ironically dreary. The Dior ads often have gray skies and bright colors. I liked this one. The second and third photographs came from inspiration from Jeremy Enslow's architecture gallery. He uses the building as a rule of thirds, and from a lower angle. I liked the lighting on this day as well, once again it was more gray than sunny and it worked in this favor for this particular photo. I liked the way the color was brought out in both of the buildings.

My photographer of choice is George Ferris. He is actually a student here at OSU, graduating and starting his own business traveling around The States. He does lighting portraits using a mix of high quality lighting and items you can find around the house to highlight his subject. I am not a fan of doing portraits myself, but really love his lighting. I tried to use this bars lighting, and utilize reflective surfaces to create repetition and highlight the bartender in a practically blacked-out bar.

I decided to use Allison V. Smith’s photos to use for the imitation assignment. I tried to imitate the style of the pictures that she used in Marfa, TX. In almost all of those pictures there is a rustic and country look that I thought I would be able to capture in Stillwater. Even though the lighting in my pictures is not as great as hers, I thought I did a pretty good job of finding places in Stillwater and on the outskirts of Stillwater to take pictures of. In her pictures there is a mixture of random buildings that look a little run down and then pictures of the country.

These are my photos attempting to imitate Joe Stefanchik's Documentary II under the Documentary Wedding section of his Web site.
The pictures are all action shots trying to capture the moment, and most were taken from a low angle. In a couple photos in Documentary II, there is a mirror he included in the pictures and so I took advantage of the mirrors at this bridal shop and liked some of the reflections in the photos.

Imitation Assignment

I chose Liz Martin for this assignment, in particular her project "Spring Revival." I thought in this project she did a great job of capturing the beauty of the season. In all of her work, she does an amazing job of capturing her surroundings. In my pictures I tried to capture the textures, colors and overall feeling of fall...

Imitation

Tim Walker shoots with a fashion-focused type of style. A lot of his work shows objects or people in places they wouldn’t usually be found; the fun and playful in a classy and elegant location. Tim Walker seems to use a lot of soft lighting and color, also. Lots of his pictures are also really simple and clean without distractions and messiness inside the picture. The people used are usually very serious or solemn, and the objects in the pictures are not often featured with elegant people; balloons, motorcycles and old Volkswagens. I tried to imitate his style by putting a girl dressed for a formal event in a sign graveyard.

Imitation Assignment

I chose Misty Keasler for my imitation assignment. When I looked at Keasler's website I noticed that she worked a lot in small towns and found interesting subjects to shoot. Although I found that her overwhelming style consisted of the way she placed things in her pictures. I noticed that she took many vertical pictures with her main subject in the bottom half of the picture. I tried to imitate this with the picture of the car in downtown Stillwater. I used the car as the main subject and the old sign and buildings in the back ground to show something interesting about this old part of town. The leaves picture is one where I played with light coming through the leaves as Keasler has done. I noticed that she also had many pictures of trees, Christmas trees in particular, so I found a tree that was similar for my last photo.

Mallory- Imitation Photos

I chose to imitate Allison Smith. All of her pictures really have a small-town feel. She really takes a lot of random pictures, some that are of random things that would only be seen in small towns (that people put up) and some are random things that are just normal wear-and-tear that occur in a small town.

Campbell Imitation Assignment

I chose Sarah Rhoads because I absolutely LOVE her pictures! She is so creative in her style and most of her pictures are engagement or wedding pictures, which will always draw a girl in. I've spent a lot of time on her blog and Web site prior to this assignment and have become familiar with how passionate about her photos and more importantly how much she gets to know her subjects. In her blog she always has something marvelous to say about the shoot or what she learned of or about the couple or family. I perceive her style to be some what saturated, but mostly I always notice her angles. They're not always just straight on. Sometimes she cuts out part of the head or feet of the person or she gets really close to the couple to where they are filling the frame. In my attempt to recreate a Sarah Rhoads photo, I cut out part of the body of my subjects. I just got the feet of them and part of their upper body, but not their faces. I could never capture her style to a "T," but I tried.

Imitation Assignment

I attempted to imitate Misty Keasler’s photography. She completed a series of pictures on East Texas. I tried to imitate her pictures of the trees. The main focus of my pictures were the trees and their surrounding objects.I included a few random objects that I felt were important to represent Oklahoma. I used framing and leading lines to capture my concepts.

The photographer I have chosen to imitate is Allison V. Smith. I specifically remember seeing her work in class and admiring her style. When I look at her photographs it gives off a small town feel. They are rustic like that of a small town, but also simple. Many of her photos have very clean lines and force the viewer to look directly at the subject. I want to imitate her style of photography by going to a small town in Oklahoma, rather than Texas where her photos were taken, and try to capture the same rustic small town feel that she does. I want to do this by incorporating colors as well as old architectural elements while still allowing the photographs to remain simple in nature. I took the following photographs on a farm about twenty miles out from Stillwater. Many times, small towns wouldn’t exist without the surrounding farms. I hoped to capture the simple nature and lifestyle of farm life.

Imitating

In my images I was hoping to imitate the style of Annie Leibovitz. What has always captured me about Leibovitz' work is that she often incorporates dramatic backgrounds, soft textures and in portraits-the rule of thirds. These are some of the elements I attempted in my pictures. I also changed them all to black and white for a more simple, dramatic effect. I felt the colors took a little away from the focus.

Imitations

I imitated the photos of Allison V. Smith.. Her pictures are content-wise very simple. She likes to focus on one specific item, usually something that is commonplace or some kind of signage, with a solid, clean background. Her photos do not allow for many distractions from the subject of the picture.

This sign was on an old building I found in downtown Stillwater. Allison V. Smith has similar photos on her site of simple signs on old buildings. The backdrop is clean and solid-- it's just the wood of the building, making the plain white sign pop.

This mailbox reminds me of an Allison V. Smith photo because it is simple, rustic, and it lies against a solid white backdrop.

This mailbox recreates the way Allison V. Smith takes everyday objects that don't seem special and makes them special by making them the clear subject of a photo. I like the contrast in color as well- something Allison also does well.

I really liked this sign at Aspen Coffee. Allison V. Smith takes lots of pictures of signs with words on them and occasionally tries to make them mean something. I think taking this photo close-up emphasizes the image and the words and makes the message more meaningful, even though you can't see the entire sign.
